A Morris County resident and former senior vice president and in-house general counsel at Moody’s pleaded guilty Thursday to not filing personal income taxes for four years, U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger announced Friday.
John Goggins, 63, of Chatham pleaded guilty to failing to file personal tax returns from 2018 to 2021. During that period, Goggins earned $54 million in gross income, authorities said.
“Mr. Goggins deeply regrets and has accepted full responsibility for his failure to file certain personal income tax returns,” a spokesperson for Goggins said Friday afternoon. “This is a personal matter that has nothing to do with his work. Mr. Goggins has paid the outstanding taxes, interest, and penalties due in connection with his misdemeanor offenses and looks forward to putting this situation behind him. He has been working with tax professionals to ensure that he remains in full compliance with his tax obligations.”
According to court documents, Goggins failed to pay taxes on over $10 million in income in 2018, $11.24 million in 2019, $21.1 million in 2020 and $12.25 million in 2021.
Goggins retired from his position at Moody’s in September 2023 and is not affiliated with the company any longer.
“This is a personal matter for Mr. Goggins, pertaining to his individual tax liabilities, and it is completely unrelated to his work at Moody’s,” a spokesperson for the company said Friday.
Goggins’ sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 6, 2024.
